And Rocha works in 20 countries on six continents. It was founded by Mr and Mrs Harris from England in 1983 in Portugal, where the first field station was established. It includes the Climate Stewards group.
The Czech national organization was founded in 2002 by the South Bohemian evangelical pastor and ornithologist Pavel Světlík. Now the main Czech centre is near Dobruška under the Eagle Mountains (Orlické hory).
Through residential field study centres and our site-based projects we carry out ecological monitoring and research in areas of high value for wildlife.
Community-based Conservation
A Rocha is active in community-based practical conservation projects around the world. We are focused on resolving issues that threaten ecosystems and the diversity of their flora and fauna.
Some projects are small-scale and led by volunteers; others are bigger-budget programmes involving whole communities dependent on the health of local forests and wetlands.
How does A Rocha work?
A Rocha’s projects are often cross-cultural in nature, with an emphasis on community and focus on science and research, practical conservation and environmental education through residential field study centres, field projects and wider promotion.
While each A Rocha organization is a separate legal entity, we share a vision, a mission, five core commitments, A Rocha’s commitment to caring for creation, and an agreement that outlines our mutual rights and responsibilities.
What is our mission?
Living out God’s call to care for creation and motivating others to do so as well.
What is our vision?
A world where nature thrives and people live justly and sustainably.
